When you run ultra distances, what you eat during the race takes on greater importance than nutrition for marathons and shorter distances. Finding what works for you is all about trial and error. What works for one runner might not work for another. But finding decent options to test can be harder than you’d think. So I wanted to share the kind of ultra race nutrition I’ve been trying out recently, along with some tried and tested winners that I’ve found to be very reliable.

Here’s what I packed for my recent tilt at the 83km Andorra Ultra Trail Celestrail, including some killer all-natural sources of energy, energy bars, gels, pouches and everything I need for good running hydration.

Plus a little look at how I choose what goes in my drop bags versus my race vest. Though I’m very guilty of carrying way too much food.
